Aly's Morning Memo: Don't Set Yourself On Fire to Keep Others Warm

I started the Morning Memo because I love a good inspirational quote! I find I have a better day when I start with an inspiring intention that I can take with me -- I hope you can too!

Today's Morning Memo is...Don't Set Yourself On Fire to Keep Others Warm.

As a woman in her thirties, I've become adept at juggling different responsibilities and roles, but in doing so, I often neglect my own needs and wellbeing. We believe that our happiness depends on keeping others happy, and this can lead to "burnout."

Burnout is a state of emotional and physical exhaustion that causes feelings of detachment and resentment towards others and ourselves. Burnout can have serious consequences on our mental and physical health. Let's explore how to prioritize our needs and avoid burnout...

1. Recognize your worth and importance

As women, we often undervalue our worth and importance, and this can lead us to prioritize other people's needs over our own. It's crucial to recognize that we are worthy and valuable in our own right. Our needs are essential to our wellbeing!!! So, don't be afraid to set boundaries and say "no" when something doesn't align with your needs. It's not selfish, but necessary for your growth and happiness.

2. De-clutter your life

Life is filled with distractions and noise. De-cluttering life is a great way to focus on what's important and...you guessed it, prioritize our needs! Choose to spend time doing things you genuinely love that bring joy and fulfillment into your life. Cut back on activities that you reluctantly say yes to and don't make you feel great.

3. Build a support system

Having a support system can be pivotal to our wellbeing and help us avoid feeling overwhelmed and alone. It's crucial to surround ourselves with people who support our choices and understand our needs. Make time for friends and family who lift you up, and foster relationships that inspire and motivate you.

4. Self-care is essential

It's essential to prioritize self-care to maintain our mental and physical health. Self-care means taking care of yourself holistically – mind, body, and spirit. Whether it's indulging in a bubble bath, taking a yoga class, or just spending some time alone, self-care is crucial! When we take care of ourselves, we have more energy to give to others.

5. Prioritizing yourself is not selfish.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember: prioritizing yourself is not selfish! We often think that putting ourselves first means we're being entitled or neglecting other people's needs. But the truth is that we can't help others if our cup is empty, and we can only give our best when we're feeling our best. We need to prioritize our needs to take care of ourselves, and in doing so, we show up better for others.

It's essential to prioritize our own needs and wellbeing and that doesn't mean we're being selfish or neglecting others. It's necessary for our growth and happiness. By implementing a few simple strategies like recognizing our worth, building a support system, and practicing self-care, we can avoid burnout and show up as our best selves. Remember that you are worthy and valuable, so don't let others rob you of your fire. Instead, harness it to keep yourself warm and thriving.
