The Kremlim says Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked his parliament for approval to launch a military intervention in Ukraine.
The Russian leader said the move is needed to protect ethnic Russians and his Navy Base in Ukraine's strategic region of Crimea.
This is happening in Crimea, the area highlighted in Pink. The Russian Black Sea Navy Fleet must past through Istanbul to reach the Med. Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. You may be certain American Submarines, and at least a portion of the American Sixth Fleet has been dispatched to that strategic location.
Earlier today Moscow cut all cell phone and internet service in Crimea.
Putin's request was made to both the Russian Senate and the Russian Upper House.
Putin's statement said "Due to the extraordinary situation in Ukraine and the threat to the lives of Russian citizens and compatriots, and the personnel staff of Russia’s military forces based in Ukraine (Crimea), according to international agreement ... I submit a request to the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation for the use of military forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine until the social and political situation in the country normalizes."
In the last 48 hours Putin has sent approximately 6-thousand paid mercenaries, troops, attack helicopters, and cargo planes into Ukraine to take control of two airports. He has about 150 thousand troops "exercising" right across the Ukraine border.
President Obama on Friday told the Russians not to do it. The White House suggested it would boycott an ecomomic meeting with Russia in June if he was ignored.
Earlier this week the White House also announced plans to cut the size of the United States Military to something less than we had at the start of World War Two.
