The National School Walkout is scheduled to happen today at 10am, across all time zones. The plan is for students to walk out of their classrooms to protest gun violence. The walkout will last 17 minutes, one minute for each life lost in the Parkland shooting in February.
While a few schools have stated that students who participate could face unspecified punishment, the general consensus across the country is that unless students start breaking the law, no punishment will occur. Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union issued advice for students who walk out, saying schools can’t legally punish them more harshly because of the political nature of their message.
