President Donald Trump spent his second Memorial Day as commander in chief by participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Following the solemn ceremony, Trump gave a short speech in front of an audience in the nearby amphitheater thanking those service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Trump said that today was about honoring the lives and deeds of America's greatest heroes and that we as Americans mourn alongside their families and strive to be worthy of their sacrifice. Trump vowed to never forget the nation's heroes.
Earlier on Monday, Trump wished people a "Happy Memorial Day" on Twitter saying that those who had died in the service of their country would be proud of how well the United States was doing today.
Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!
The president also shared a video of the Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington last year on Twitter Monday morning.
The Tomb of the Unknown soldier is a monument dedicated to U.S. service members who died without having their remains identified. Unknown soldiers from several major American conflicts, including World War I, World War II, Vietnam and Korea, have been interred there by presidents over the years. The U.S. Unknowns have been under 24/7 guard since 1937.
