Multiple Fatalities Reported In Alabama Marina Fire That Destroyed 35 Boats

A marina fire in northern Alabama left at least five people dead. The fire broke out just after midnight at the docks at Jackson County Park in Scottsboro, Alabama, and destroyed 35 boats.

Many of the vessels were houseboats and the people who lived in them were sleeping when the fire began to quickly spread along the wooden dock. The fire also damaged an aluminum roof, which was covering the ships, causing debris to rain down, preventing people from escaping.

Officials said at least five people have died and seven people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"There were numerous people rescued from the water who had escaped by going into the water," Jackson County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Rocky Harnen said. "We're trying to get divers down here to search for possible victims in the water."

Authorities are still trying to locate eight other people who may be missing.

"They had slips here," Harnen said. "That doesn't mean they're in the water, and it doesn't mean they're dead. We're making attempts to find them."

Investigators are on the scene and trying to determine how the massive blaze started.
