Lee Brice tells the story of a man paying his farewells to his former self in “Killed The Man.” The reflective single and storytelling music video arrived on Friday (October 31).

Michael WhitworthJared ConradTroy Cartwright and Chandler Baldwin wrote the song, which Brice co-produced with Ben Glover and Jerrod Niemann. “‘Killed The Man’ symbolizes the death of a man’s old self, reborn as his best version to serve something greater,” per a previously-issued press release announcing the single earlier this month. “The track explores the profound transformation of shedding one's ego to embrace a higher purpose,” and adding a “lighthearted spin” to the story. Brice, who married wife Sara in 2013, reflected on what the song means to him.

“To me, ‘Killed The Man’ is about that kind of love that changes everything,” Brice said in a statement. “The old me didn’t survive it — and I’m glad he didn’t. She buried him, married me, and I came out the other side a different man.”

“Killed The Man” made its debut one day early on iHeartCountry. On Friday, Brice premiered the music video, which seemingly begins with the search for a missing man and ends as a love story. Brice previously said: “When I first heard this song, it made me look back at my own life and see the man who I was isn’t the man I am today. I think the message is something anyone can relate to as we all strive to evolve and grow through life and its challenges. For me, ‘Killed The Man’ captures that stripping away of the ego to become who God intended me to be, leaning into family, faith, and something bigger than myself."
