If you have a pudgy poochie, help is on the way…eventually. It’s not a small problem; pet obesity has reached serious levels, with around 60% of dogs and cats in the U.S. now overweight. To tackle this, a biotech firm called Okava, in partnership with Vivani Medical, is developing a small implant that delivers a drug called exenatide directly under the pet’s skin.
This implant can reduce appetite and mimic hunger control, similar to human weight‑loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Early trials with cats have shown promising results in calorie control and weight reduction. If all goes well, Okava hopes to launch the treatment by 2028 or 2029.
