Residents of Yerevan, Armenia, had quite a May Day morning when reports spread that a zebra had escaped from the city zoo and was roaming one of the capital's busiest streets. Police and emergency services were dispatched after receiving the report early in the morning. The "zebra" was quickly corralled and tied up by zoo staff and bystanders. Only one problem with the report: it wasn’t a zebra, it was a donkey that someone had painted with black and white stripes.

The Yerevan Zoo issued a statement confirming all of its actual zebras were safely in their enclosures and that an unidentified citizen had painted his donkey and brought it to the street in front of the zoo to make a video. Law enforcement was working to identify the owner, and the zoo said that chemical dyes can be toxic to animals and may cause health problems, and asked that no one pull a similar stunt.
