When Leaner High School senior Keilany Solano’s name was called as prom queen, she was thrilled. The Texas student took a photo with her boyfriend, Daniel, who won prom king and then she made an unexpected move: she gave her crown and sash away to another nominee.
Abby Cano was also nominated and when Solano saw her standing there after her win, she felt like passing the honor to her classmate. Cano has Down syndrome and Solano says she felt like she should be prom queen. “I did it because I knew at that moment Abby would be even happier than me,” she says. “And I felt like she deserved it more.”
The gesture surprised and touched Abby’s mom, Sabrina Wykoff, who says her daughter has always been treated with respect at school and this is just an example of that. “So there is a picture of her and her sash and the tiara — I was, like, ‘Wow, Abby’s the prom queen!’” the proud mom says. “That’s amazing.”
