If you live in West Michigan, there’s a good chance you’ve heard his voice before. Whether you’re driving to work with a cup of coffee in hand or tuning in while getting the kids ready for school, B93.7’s Mike Aguilar has been part of your morning routine for years.
But when the mic turns off and the studio lights dim, Mike heads home to his favorite audience of all, his wife Ali and their three children, Cecily, Milo, and Sebastian. Together, the Aguilar family has found their place in Hudsonville, a community that Mike describes as the perfect mix of small-town warmth with a big-hearted connection.
“Hudsonville has that perfect mix of small-town warmth with a big heart,” Mike says. “I have a lot of family and friends here and they’d all say the same. People look out for each other. Whether it’s rallying around a local cause, showing up for Friday night football, or just saying hi at Meijer, there’s this sense that we’re all part of something together.”
For the Aguilars, that community spirit has been felt since the day they arrived. “It’s not flashy,” Mike adds. “But it’s full of pride, hard work, and real connection. That’s what we love most about living here.” Family life for the Aguilars is busy, joyful, and centered on creating memories together. Cecily, 11, is a thoughtful and creative soul who loves painting, singing in Honors Choir, and diving into STEM activities. Milo, 6, is an imaginative kid who can spend hours designing new creations out of Legos and is just starting to explore his interest in sports. And then there’s Sebastian, their two-year-old bundle of energy who’s happiest when he’s along for the ride with his older siblings.
Their home is filled with laughter, projects, and traditions from Pizza Fridays with Wesco Deli treats to their annual over-the-top family Halloween costumes that have become somewhat of a neighborhood event. “Our neighbors often stop by while we’re outside taking photos just to see what this year’s theme will be,” Mike laughs. When the weather warms, the Aguilars spend much of their time camping across Michigan. “Camping is our biggest family hobby,” Mike shares. “Something Ali and I enjoyed even before we had kids, and we’ve continued the tradition as our family has grown.” Their adventures often include adventures in the Upper Peninsula and always with a stop at Mackinac Island, a family favorite.
While Mike’s family and community remain his greatest sources of joy, his passion for connecting with others extends far beyond his home. His journey in radio began almost by accident. Growing up in Belding, Mike graduated from Belding High School and was attending Grand Rapids Community College before transferring to Grand Valley State University. In between, he landed an internship in radio, and from that moment on, he was hooked.
“Honestly, one of the best parts of the job is getting to interact with people from all over,” he says. “Every day, I get to hear and share stories, celebrate local wins, and connect with people from all walks of life. It gives me a real appreciation for how much good is happening in our area and how much people care.”
Years in the industry have taught Mike more than just how to run a successful show. “The biggest lesson has been the power of listening,” he explains. “You gain so much perspective by hearing people’s stories, their experiences, their passions, their challenges. It’s shown me how important it is to show up consistently. You never know who might need that bit of encouragement or connection.”
He also believes that local media plays a vital role in keeping communities connected. “It’s not just about news,” he says. “It’s about creating meaningful conversations. Making sure we’re building a sense of community. That’s something worth protecting.” Mike’s workday starts early, very early. His alarm rings long before sunrise, giving him just enough time to make it to the studio before most of Hudsonville is awake. “Four a.m. comes fast,” he says. “But I love it. It’s become part of who I am.”
Over the years, Mike has seen the radio industry evolve dramatically. “Radio isn’t just something you listen to in your car anymore. We’re part of all things now,” he explains. “You can take us anywhere on your phone with the iHeartRadio app. You’ll find favorite shows, music, and podcasts all in one place.” He’s witnessed the transition from pre-social media days to the digital world of today and loves how the platform continues to engage audiences in new ways. “I’ve had the chance to meet plenty of celebrities, but honestly, some of my favorite memories come from connecting with listeners and being involved in the community.”
Five years ago, Mike and Ali decided it was time to plant roots in Hudsonville. After living in the Belmont and Rockford areas, they were drawn to the strong school systems, safe neighborhoods, and the small-town values that reminded them of where they grew up. “Before moving here, our top priority was finding great schools and a real sense of community,” Mike says. “Hudsonville really encapsulates that same feeling we both grew up with. Having family here, including my in-laws, makes it feel even more like home.” They’ve come to love their neighborhood for its friendliness and warmth. “Neighbors wave when they drive by, kids play together outside, it’s peaceful and family-oriented,” Mike says. “It’s the kind of place where you really feel like you belong.”
That same sense of belonging fuels Mike’s desire to give back. Through iHeartMedia West Michigan, he’s been part of countless community initiatives, including their annual radiothon for Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, which raised over $600,000 last year. He’s also proud to support the Alzheimer’s Association, recently joining their team to emcee the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and help raise awareness throughout the year. “It’s something close to my heart,” he says. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to use my platform to support causes that make a real difference.”
As Hudsonville continues to grow, Mike says he hopes the community always holds onto what makes it so special, the connection between people. “Keep showing up for each other,” he says. “Whether it’s through a kind word, supporting local events, or just tuning in, it matters more than you know.” He adds one more thought that perfectly captures both his career and his outlook on life: “Don’t underestimate how much of a difference you make just by being part of this community.”
For Mike, that sense of connection always circles back to home. Whether he’s sharing stories on air or sitting around a campfire with his family, his purpose remains the same: to build connections, spread kindness, and appreciate the good that surrounds them. Because at the end of the day, family and community are what it’s all about, and in Hudsonville, the Aguilars have found both.
